History of the model
BMW conceived the E30 M3 in 1985 as a direct competitor to Mercedes-Benz. Their recent release of the 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth had given a significant competitive edge in Group A Touring Car Racing.
Not to be outdone by their rivals in Stuttgart, BMW’s engineering team developed a worthy contender in the shape of the E30 M3 which burst onto the global touring car scene of the 1980s, netting podium spots around the world.
The E30 M3 would go on to achieve success in rally and road racing, both for BMW and other racing teams including Prodrive and AC Schnitzer. The E30 road car was produced specifically to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring car racing.
Today, it has a proud motorsports history, including wins at world-renowned races such as the 24 Hours Nurburgring, World Touring Car Championship Driver’s Title in 1987, and countless wins across the globe on both tarmac circuits and rally settings.
